No Power to Half the House

Troubleshooting if you have no power to half the house.

1  First check the voltage at the electrical panel to make sure you have 120v on each phase and 120v out of each breaker by having the breaker on and testing voltage from the breaker lock down screw to the neutral bar. If you find a whole phase is dead there’s probably a loose connection on your transformer outside. Call the power utility company.

2  Next check the voltage at the circuit that is not working by checking voltage at a receptacle in the dead half of the house. If you measure a partial voltage like 50 or 90v then you probably have a loose neutral wire on a device such as a receptacle or a switch or in a wirenuted joint.

3  Next open a receptacle w or switch where you have full 120v power closest to where you don’t have power or have reduced voltage and check for loose wires on the device or in a wirenut.

4  You can also disconnect multiple hot wires under a wirenut usually in a switch box and touch the incoming hot wire to each of the other hot wires one by one to find the problem line hot wire .

Electrical Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Home Safe and Functional

Maintaining the electrical systems in your home is crucial for ensuring both safety and functionality. Electrical issues can pose serious risks such as fire hazards and electrocution if left unaddressed. By implementing regular maintenance practices, you can safeguard your home and family while ensuring that your electrical systems operate efficiently. In this blog, we’ll explore some essential electrical maintenance tips that every homeowner should know.

1. Schedule Regular Inspections:

Regular inspections by a qualified electrician are essential for detecting potential issues before they escalate into major problems. Consider scheduling an annual electrical inspection to assess the condition of your wiring, outlets, switches, and appliances. A professional electrician can identify any signs of wear, damage, or code violations, allowing you to address them promptly.

2. Test GFCI Outlets and AFCI Breakers:

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets and Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) breakers are designed to prevent electrical shocks and fires, respectively. Test GFCI outlets monthly by pressing the “Test” and “Reset” buttons to ensure they are functioning correctly. Similarly, AFCI breakers should be tested periodically to verify their operation. If you encounter any issues during testing, contact an electrician for further evaluation.

3. Replace Damaged Wiring and Components:

Inspect your electrical wiring for any signs of damage, such as fraying, exposed wires, or insulation deterioration. Damaged wiring can increase the risk of electrical fires and should be replaced immediately by a qualified electrician. Additionally, be vigilant for overheating outlets, buzzing sounds, or flickering lights, as these may indicate underlying issues that require professional attention.

4. Keep Electrical Panels Accessible:

Ensure that your electrical panel is easily accessible and free from obstructions. In the event of an emergency or maintenance work, electricians need unimpeded access to the panel to shut off power to specific circuits. Avoid storing items in front of the panel and maintain clear pathways around it to facilitate safe operation.

5. Exercise Caution with DIY Projects:

While some electrical tasks may seem straightforward, such as replacing a light fixture or installing a ceiling fan, it’s crucial to exercise caution when working with electricity. Always turn off the power to the circuit you’re working on and use appropriate safety gear, including insulated tools. If you’re uncertain or uncomfortable with electrical work, seek assistance from a licensed electrician to avoid accidents and injuries.

6. Invest in Surge Protection:

Surge protectors help safeguard your electronic devices and appliances from voltage spikes caused by power surges. Consider installing surge protection devices at your main electrical panel and individual outlets to protect sensitive equipment from damage. Additionally, unplug electronics during severe storms to minimize the risk of damage from lightning strikes and power surges.

7. Educate Your Family:

Ensure that everyone in your household is aware of basic electrical safety practices. Teach family members to avoid overloading outlets, using damaged cords or appliances, and tampering with electrical components. Encourage children to stay away from electrical outlets and appliances to prevent accidents.

By incorporating these electrical maintenance tips into your home care routine, you can help ensure the safety and functionality of your electrical systems for years to come. Remember, when in doubt, always consult with a qualified electrician to address any concerns or issues promptly. Investing in electrical maintenance today can save you from costly repairs and potentially life-threatening emergencies in the future.

If an electrical contractor changes out your electrical panel make sure they keep up with the latest code and install enough arcfault  breakers so that your family is properly protected.  If the contractor does not install these breakers it knocks $600 off the cost of the panel change out but doesn’t give you a safe and up to code panel.

Years ago junctions were made in lighting of ceiling fan boxes and to troubleshoot them it means using a ladder and removing a light or fan. Modern wiring makes junctions mostly in switch boxes that are much easier to access for any future rewiring.
